‘No evidence’ of Tapanui flu

PA Wellington The Health Department said last evening there was no evidence to suggest an epidemic of myalgic encephalomyelitis, the disease known as Tapanui flu. The head of disease prevention, Dr John Clements, said the 18 district health offices had been asked to survey doctors to find the number of people suffering from the disease. Apart from Dunedin and Hamilton, the results varied from none to 25 cases in each district. There were about 220 cases in the Dunedin health district, which includes the South Otago township of Tapanui where many people have been stricken.’

In Hamilton, one doctor said he had 80 patients with the condition.

Dr Clements said there was no single laboratory or clinical test to diagnose' the disease, which meant it was difficult to diagnose with certainty. "An accurate diagnosis is the prime concern of general practitioners, and so it is important to recognise other treatable conditions such as depression which may be confused with the symptoms of ME.,” he said. The condition often

followed epidemics of viral disease.
