Nuclear blast at Mururoa

PA Wellington A nuclear explosion on Mururoa Atoll, the third this year, was recorded by seismological observers at Rarotonga in the Cook Islands yesterday. The superintendent of the Seismological Observatory in Wellington, Dr Warwick Smith, said the explosion at 5.16 a.m. (New Zealand time) was “quite a small one,” estimated at five kilotonnes.

It was recorded on the Rarotonga seismograph, run by D.S.I.R. staff, but not picked up in Wellington.
