M.E.D. men apply ban
Linemen and cable jointers employed by the Municipal Electricity Department in Christchurch met yesterday and resolved to ban work involving new power connections to both domestic and commercial buildings.
The ban came 14 days after the Engineers’ Union gave notice of industrial action because of the refusal of the Minister of Labour, Mr Bolger, to grant
an exemption to the Wage Freeze Regulations. The 60 workers say that a serious anomaly has been created by the regulations and that they have already lost more than $l5OO each as a result. The Christchurch City Council has agreed that there is an anomaly and joined the union in making representations to Mr Bolger last year. The general manager of the M.E.D., Mr C. S. Laurie,
said that at present 21 domestic connections were waiting to be done, and one commercial connection. There were also seven temporary connections and four orders for improvement of existing mains supplies. The linemen will continue with other work, including repairs. Mr Laurie said that there was plenty of work for them. Union and employer representatives will meet today.
