New fast Peugeot
Lancia will soon launch a new Peugeot 505-sized saloon, the upmarket version of which will be powered by a 141.6 kW (190bhp) Ferrari V 6 engine, which should give it a top speed of more than 225 km h (140 m. ph.). The Italian company’s newcomer is the first in a series of Type Four cars being developed jointly by Fiat, Lancia and '.Alfa Romeo. The Lancia version, which will be called the Thema, will replace the Trevi and Gamma models and will go on sale about November.
The car's four-door, booted body has been styled at Guigiaro's Ital Design studio and is all-steel, incorporating a floorpan produced by Fiat.
This will be yet another front-wheel-drive car. for which five transverselymounted engines will be available.
The basic power unit will be of 1.6 litres and it will probably be sold on the Continent only. A pair of 2litre engines will also be offered. The first of these wiil be a fuel-injected unit employing the same block as that in the 2-litre Lancia HPE. but the second will be a fuel-injected turbocharged version, which is expected to develop about 119 kW (160bhp).
To compete in the executive sector. Lancia will also produce a 2.8-litre Thema. using the French-built PRV V 6. which powers the Renault R 25. Peugeot 604 and Volvo 760. There will be a 2.5 litre
diesel-engined version also, but the most exciting Thema wiil be the 3-litre Ferrari V 6 version This engine will be a development of the old Dino power unit.
Lancia and Fiat are part of the mammoth Fiat group and Fiat's own Type Four model will be a hatchback which will replace the Argenta. It should appear alongside the Thema at the Turin motor show in November, but it is not expected to go into production until about March next
Alfa Romeo's Type Four ear will replace the Alfetta It may be seen at Turin in November, but it is not known when series production is contemplated.
