Pool fencing urged

County councils should enforce the fencing of private swimming pools and prevent many young children drowning, said Mrs Vicky Duncan, chairperson of the Accident Compensation Corporation, yesterday. Mrs Duncan, who is also a councillor in Rangitikei

County, urged delegates at the conference to adopt the revised by-law on pool fencing which has been prepared by the commission.

The commission had drawn up a model by-law which could be adapted to suit the county. So far it had

been adopted by 35 counties, it counties did not act now to adopt the preventive by-law, the probable options would be that central Government would enforce minimum standards, not enabling the flexibility of a county by-law, Mrs Duncan said.
