Sumner favourite for squash trophy

Vistalite Sumner I is now favoured to win the Blank Trophy after its whitewash of Christchurch Football in the latest round of the New Zealand Permanent men’s division one inter-club squash competition.

With three weeks remaining in the first competition round Sumner has a six-point lead, but it may yet come down to the final contest — against Hunter Lounge Suites Linwood on July 3. On Tuesday evening Sumner was a little fortunate to win in the No. 3 position with the junior, Steven Wren, down, 2-8, in the fifth against Steve McDonald (Football) and having to survive four match balls.

In another contest Burnside I had its second win on end and the fifth clean sweep of the evening though Michael Allred was in dire straits against Ron Marshall after dropping the first two games and ’ trailing, 4-8. in the

third. The start of the new women's competition round was marred by a bad injury suffered by a prominent Canterbury player, Mary Hunt (St Andrew’s), who snapped an achilles tendon in the fourth game of her match against Carolyn Viggers (Mount Pleasant.) Hunt, the third women’s division one player to suffer such a fate this season, will probably miss the rest of the competition. Result:— WOMEN Mount Pleasant 10, St Andrew’s 0 C. Viggers beat M.
