Adult cattle demand down

Buyers from North Otago and Canterbury ensured store cattle had a satisfactory sale at the Addington market yesterday. Although the demand for adult cattle was not quite as strong as it has been in recent sales, prices were sound. This week’s drop in the export beef schedule may have restrained bidding slightly. The calf market, however, remained buoyant. Good steers exceeded $3OO and were in line with recent values. Several sales of 2%-year-old steers were made at $450 to $470, and a line of two-year-old steers from Hawkeswood Estate, Parnassus, sold to $538. Pregnancy tested in-calf heifers from Lake Hills Partnership, Kaikoura, sold to $402. Good steer calves sold between $270 and $316 and heifers made to $312. The yardings were 660 adult

cattle and 430 calves. Sales included:— Calves: P. and S. Walshe (Tai Tapu), 39 Hereford steers at $316, 11 heifers at $312; M. C. Gilbert (Kaituna), 9 Hereford steers at $300; Estate H. S.
