African lion shortage
NZPA-AAP London A lioness born in a British zoo has been exported ro a small West African country which is running out of the big cats. The “Daily Mail” newspaper reported that the deal was set up after a veterinarian, Jerry Benbow, visited Gambia in March. He was shocked to find that the lion in Gambia’s national park was the only one left in the whole countrv,
“There are few wild animals left for the lions to eat and so the population has been hunted virtually out of existence,” Mr Benbow said. He arranged for Diiys, aged two, a lioness at Longleat Safari Park, where he is a veterinarian, to be sent to Gambia. “She was one lioness who was not really happy here," Mr Benbow said. There are plenty of lions in animal-mad Britain. They can be bought and sold for about £lOO ($215) each.
