Woman’s troubles

The German woman director, Jeanine Meerapfel, takes a look at Nazi persecution, emigration, poverty and alcoholism in "Malou,” which will be screened by the Canterbury Film Society next week. Hannah, a young woman in her 30s, dissatisfied with her life and marriage, decides to retrace the steps of her mother. Malou, in order to clarify her own problems. Malou's life then unfolds in a series of flashbacks.

By reliving her mother's experiences, Hannah comes to terms with her sense of insecurity and with Germany’s xenophobia. The supporting 42-minute film is "Janet Frame" (N.Z., 1977).

"Malou” will be screened at University Room Al, Ham, on Tuesday, and the Museum Theatrette, Rolleston Avenue, on Wednesday, both at 7.30 p.m. Membership may be bought at the door, and the public is welcome for a nominal entrance donation.
