Aikmans Road cleaning
Sir,—After several complaints to the Christchurch City Council, with no satisfaction, about the gutters in Aikmans Road, a letter to the newspaper may help. Recently my 70-year-old aunt was cleaning the gutters when she slipped. She was badly bruised and in shock. It is an utter disgrace that a 70-year-old woman has to do a job that the ratepayers pay the council to do. After visiting there for four years I know why my aunt and other neighbours are complaining. The gutters are full of grime and other rubbish and they smell. It is high time the council did its job properly, and made a regular job of it. If Merivale is classed as an upper class suburb, I am glad I live in the eastern suburbs. — Yours, etc.,
J. M. LONGLY. May 24, 1984.
[The Christchurch City Council general manager and town clerk, Mr J. H. Gray, replies: “Generally the side channels in Aikmans Road
are cleaned at approximately fourweekly intervals. However, during the last two months emphasis has been placed on leaf-cleaning operations and this has disrupted the regular sweeping programme. The leaf-fall period is now finished, and the normal rounds have been resumed with Aikmans Road having been swept within the last week. There is no record of several complaints concerning Aikmans Road channels having been made to the council in recent times.’’]
