Apology for assault
PA Napier A youth who admitted assaulting a Napier policewoman and later apologised to her at the Waiohiki marae was fined $lOO when he appeared in the District Court at Napier for sentence.
Judge Tucker told John Rangi Francis Tareha, aged 17, unemployed, of Taradale, that the fine was less than would have normally been imposed, because of the apology.
Tareha had earlier admitted assaulting Constable Rawinia Maru on May 30. He told the Court that he wished to apologise to her at the marae in front of his elders.
The Judge said Tareha’s public apology was to his credit, but he did not want to see the case set a precedent.
The Judge said he had received a letter fom the constable saying the apology had taken place.
