Tirade brings thanks
NZPA staff correspondent Sydney
The Australian Tourism Minister’s tirade last year against “piddling, smelly, scratching koalas” has earned him the grateful thanks of the New South Wales advertising industry. Industry executives who held a lunch for the Minis-
ter, Mr Brown, in Sydney told him that from the time he had “tipped the bucket” on the marsupials the rejuvenation of Australian tourism had begun.
Mr Brown told the executives he had felt Australia’s image needed improvement on the image of koalas and kangaroos, and that a revamped advertising cam-
paign had Americans queuing at Qantas offices in the United States.
“They wanted to know such things as whether we speak English,” Mr Brown said. “They expected to be assailed by hordes of koalas on arrival here.
“I tipped the bucket on koalas, but they have been dropping it on us for years.”
