Salvation Army captain runs for record

A Salvation Army captain was two hours ahead of schedule last evening in his attempt to break the record for a Greymouth to Christchurch run.

Captain Graeme McMurdo left Greymouth at 7 a.m. yesterday and was in Reefton for a meal break at 6.40 p.m., two hours earlier than expected, said Major Graham Waring of the Salvation Army in Christchurch last evening. Major Waring said Captain McMurdo, who is aged 42, had had no difficulties so far. The weather had been drizzly, but calm and mild.

Captain McMurdo hopes to break the 90%-hour record for the 331 km run, set

by Mr Ivan Hawkey two years ago.

He is accompanied by his wife, Lorna, and two Salvation Army friends in a motorised caravan.

Captain McMurdo expects to be at the top of the Lewis Pass some time this evening, and anticipates reaching Christchurch by 7.30 p.m. on Friday evening. He is running about 1% hours at a time with a half hour rest. He take longer breaks between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. each morning. The Christchurch City Corps of the Salvation Army is making a big fund-raising effort in connection with Captain McMurdo’s run, to raise money for the Citadel building fund.
