Arrest threat no bluff

PA Auckland

Many companies thought the Justice Department was bluffing when it warned that warrants would be issued for the arrest of company directors if outstanding traffic fines were not paid, a court spokesman said yesterday. The deputy registrar of the District Court, at Auckland, Mr Nigel Lesueur, said he was disappointed at the lack of response to the warnings. Action had already been taken over the fines, which total about $BO,OOO.

The fines, mainly for minor traffic infringements, involved about 1500 Auckland companies. Mr Lesueur said final reminders had been sent to the companies.

Ten warrants to arrest company directors, summonses, and several warrants to seize company vehicles had already been issued, he said.
