Terminal’s volume up 17 p.c.

Volume through the Cashin Quay container terminal for April was 17 per cent above the budgeted figure, the terminal’s manager, Mr Bill Siddall, reported to the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s trade and commercial development committee. Ten container ships used the terminal during the month, exchanging 2873 containers. Mr Siddall said the increase stemmed from full imports and exports with the volume of empty containers being well below the budgeted figure. The increase in containers reflected increases in terminal revenue of 13 per cent and container freight station revenue of 9 per cent. However, revenue was offset by an increase in costs of 5 per cent, he said. Revenue for the seven months to date was 1 per cent below budget. Reefer and wash were the main areas to record a shortfall. He said these were expected to show an improvement by the end of this month. May figures, which have not been released yet, indicate that the terminal had its busiest month since it opened in June, 1977. Mr Siddall said the high terminal volume was a direct result of the “bunching” of vessels in New Zealand terminals after the recent Australian watersiders go-slow campaign.

The dispute, which affected

cargo handling at Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane was lifted on May 11 after a 22-day campaign, releasing a number of vessels to New Zealand destinations at the same time.
