Jubilate music
The sonorities of trumpets, trombones, organ, choir and soloists will be heard in the Catholic Cathedral when the Jubilate Singers present their next programme in Christchurch.
The concert, entitled “Music for voices, organ and brass,” will take place on June 16. The choir is joined by David Childs (ore, the brass section and janist of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, and former choir member Judy Bellingham (mezzo-soprano). The concert opens with a setting of Psalm 150 by Schutz for two spatially separated choirs of voices and instruments; a piece written in the Italian tradition of antiphonal writing. A Christchurch composer, Dorothy Buchanan’s “Six choruses from Oedipus Rex,” originally written for the Court Theatre’s 1983
production, will be performed by Judy Bellingham and David Childs.
Other items in the programme are Bach’s motet, “Lobet den Herrn,” and Purcell’s “Music for the funeral of Queen Mary” (1695). The latter contains incidental music for brass which became well-known through its use in the film “Barry Lyndon.” It also contains some of Purcell’s most expressive vocal writing.
The concert ends with a rousing setting of the “Gloria” by English composer John Rutter. The work was commissioned by the Mel Olsen choir in Omaha, and first performed in 1974. Because of recording commitments and invitations to sing outside Christchurch, this will be the Jubilate Singers’ only concert in the city until their Christmas programme in December.
