’Night Mother

Marsha Norman’s 1983 Blackburn and Pulitzer Prize-winning play, “’Night Mother,” opens at the Court Theatre Studio on Saturday. “’Night Mother” focuses on ordinary people who display extraordinary courage in an exceptional situation. The strength and humour of Ms Norman’s successful play derives from this. From the early announcement of an adult daughter’s decision to commit suicide, the play follows the daughter as she sets the house in order, replacing sofa covers,

refilling candy jars, explaining lists and generally preparing her mother for life without her. The play traces the mother’s attempts to understand and reverse this decision. But, Marsha Norman says, the play is not about victims. The demanding roles of mother and daughter will be played by Elizabeth Moody and Wickham Pack. Elizabeth O’Connor directs her second play for the Court Theatre.
