Library design
Sir, — The reply from the City Librarian to a letter (June 9), ignores a lot of justifiable complaints. The majority of I people speak to consider the new library a most unappealing building. The layout is confused and confusing with the new user being bewildered by the plethora of signs. The noise of the escalator is highly irritating. How the staff put up with this all day is beyond me. Already the building is not big enough: shelves are packed tight with books. I presume the library will have to throw out a lot of books merely to accommodate its new purchases, and thus lose out on being a good central collection for Christchurch. Your correspondent mentioned airconditioning: does it exist? The building is nearly always stuffy and unpleasant, especially away from the ground floor. Why not admit that the design award was won for the outside of the building, which is admittedly fine, but let us not fool ourselves that it is a building that serves the public of Christchurch well. — Yours, etc., J. COLLINS. June 10, 1984.
