Three in nuclear protest climb Big Ben
NZPA-AP London Three men evaded police guards and climbed the famous Big Ben clock tower in London yesterday in a demonstration against nuclear weapons testing. As daylight came, witnesses saw two men lying in hammocks 55m opposite the south face of the big clock. The clock tower soars above the Houses of Parliament by the Thames River at Westminster Bridge. A third man was chained to a ladder nearby and a banner slung between the two hammocks read, “Time To Stop Nuclear Testing.” The demonstration was planned by the Greenpeace environmental organisation and the climb was carried out by “volunteer members,” said a spokesman. He said an added demand is compensation for people suffering as a result of the British nuclear tests in Australia in the 19505, who allege that their cancers and other illnesses were a result of exposure to radiation.
