Liquor firm wants to lend videos in Riccarton
Plans to extend services at a liquor store in Riccarton Road to include video hire seem likely to meet with approval from the Riccarton Borough Council. The application for service, by Quill Humphreys, Ltd, owner of Cellar Ghost Liquor Cellars, was supported by the council’s town planning committee last evening. Rather than build on an alternative site, the firm intended to accommodate the video business in the liquor store as a separate activity, the committee was told. That would follow the same procedure used at the
firm's store on Colombo Street. The firm's general manager, finance and administration, Mr B. Hitchon, said in a letter that the plan had been prepared to provide entry from Riccarton Road, then to divide traffic flow depending on whether customers wished to buy liquor or hire films. A draft plan showed a car-park area for 54 cars as well as space for 12 car-parks in a six-metre wide service lane. Mr Hitchon said the business's main activity would be that of tape hire. Any member of the public could join the library for a fee and hire tapes for a specific period. A quick return "drop
box" would be provided so that members could drive-in and deposit the tape without the need to find a car-park. From the firm’s experience at Colombo Street, the liquor store and video business were compatible and car-parking demands of customers for each service were at different times, he said. The Mayor of Riccarton. Mr R. W. J. Harrington, strongly supported the proposal. It would be a good service and he hoped to see it established, he said. Cr R. S. Lester said that the only problem it might create would be the traffic flow on Riccarton Road.
