School of computing

Waikato University hopes to establish a “school of computing” that would produce computer professionals to help New Zealand cope with the “information era” — and would manufacture software in a bid to be selfsupporting. The school, the computer equivalent of an engineering school, would train students for careers as designers, systems analysts and software experts. Applications have been made to the University Grants Committee for $1.2

million for staff and $l.B million for equipment to run the school over a five-year period. The university is also asking the Hamilton City Council for political support. The school would accept second-year students from any New Zealand university, providing they met selection criteria, and would pay its way by producing software and taking on contracts from Government agencies or private enterprise as practical exercises for the students.
