Horses cause complaints

PA Masterton Complaints about horses being “parked” outside the post office are piling up in the Wairarapa town of Eketahuna, according to a community councillor, Mr Ross Rowden. He told a council meeting that he had received complaints about that and about people riding their horses into the town, and over grass verges. “You can’t blame the residents of a town for getting upset about it. They maintain the verges. It is virtually vandalism,” he said. Cr Graham Adam said

the council in Eketahuna should express concern about the indiscriminate damage to grass verges by horse riders. The Town Clerk, Mr Terry Melville, said little could be done by the council unless a by-law was passed prohibiting horses in the area. He said although there had been a number of complaints received at the council office the offenders were difficult to catch and had not been identified. Cr Cliff Trevelyan said he had heard of a horse being ridden into the borough chambers.
