Nuclear deterrent

Sir, — Nick Lee-Frampton once again puts forward the pro-militar-ist case with his description of the Trident submarine system as a deterrent (June 7). Certainly, "there is no sign that the world is becoming less dangerous” as first-strike nuclear war machines are passed off as deterrents. When the British Government acquires the Trident II (D-5) it will have a highly accurate and destabilising weapon. It is interesting that Nick Lee-Frampton, who ran a defence education group in Suffolk about a year and a half ago (February 24), can get regular pro-militarist articles published in “The Press.” It is not nearly so easy for peace activists. Mr Larry Ross, secretary of the New Zealand Nuclear Free Zone Committee, has told me that he submitted one in vain in reply to an anti-peace-movement one by T. J. Sprott (April 13). So much for the free press. - Yours, etc., D. K. SMALL. June 7, 1984.
