Cashmere wins to stay in Chatham Cup

Cashmere-Wanderers progressed to the fourth round of the Adidas Chatham Cup soccer competition with a 10 win over New Brighton at English Park on Saturday. It was not an inspiring Cup tie. There were few clear-cut chances created by either side and the standard of play was below what might have been anticipated. Brighton battled determinedly against the more skilful Cashmere team and had the better of play for much of the match. Cashmere always looked the more likely to score, but Brighton managed to keep the Cashmere defence on its toes. The solitary goal came in the 69th minute. Brighton’s goal-keeper, David van Voorst, failed to clear the ball under pressure and it rolled to Cashmere’s striker, Steve Bailey, who thumped the ball into the net. Cashmere pressured in search of the vital second goal, which would have given it some breathing space. Both David Abendanon and Angus Neave had good chances with headers, which were off target. Brighton’s attack will be sharpened for the rest of the season by the return of Dion Moir, from Woolston W.M.C. Another player has left Woolston to join Cashmere. Neil Lilley, who played as an attacking left-sided midfielder, was also unable to play for Cashmere on Saturday for the same reason. Two Hertz League matches were played on Saturday. South Canterbury

United ended a lean run of eight consecutive losses with a 1-0 win over Western in Timaru. Graeme Jones scored the only goal of the match, towards the end of the second half, from a freekick. Christchurch United’s reserve team was too strong for Burndale United, winning, 4-1. Kees Doornenbal scored twice for United, with the other goals coming from Johann Verweij and Duncan

Bean. Andrew Waites scored for Burndale. HERTZ LEAGUE

In other games, Cashmere beat Technical, 3-1; New Brighton and Riccarton drew, 1-1; Halswell United kept its lead with a 2-0 win over Western; and Rangers edged out High School Old Boys, 2-1. PREMIER LEAGUE
