Selwyn into third round of hockey

Selwyn, the defending champion in the H. W. Smith Trophy national inter-club hockey competition, progressed to the third round yesterday with a 2-0 win against Otago University at Barrington Park. Selwyn played a much improved game after drawing with bottom placed Sydenham in a local club match on Saturday. There was more purpose in the team yesterday, and it had the game well under control when it led 2-0 at half-time. Both goals were scored by the tall, centre-forward, Richard Schoeman. Selwyn will now play either Pegasus or another team, United, in the third round.

The unseasonally warm weather of the last two days left Barrington Park in an uneven condition for the game, but both sides made light of that problem and produced some quick interpassing movements. Selwyn varied its attack well, working through both flanks and the centre, but Otago University was more direct, relying on long sweeping hits to put its forwards on to attack.

David Templeton at lefthalf and David Clements on the left-wing worked efficiently together to start several Selwyn attacks, and Ivan Bolton at right-half gave good service ’ to the Selwyn forwards. ’
