Drake’s marathon

NZPA-AAP SydneyNew Zealand runners were first and second in the women’s section of the Wang Australian marathon run through streets of Sydney yesterday. Ngaire Drake, aged 35, running her second marathon in a month, was first in 2hr 41min 255. She had a little more than two minutes to spare over another New Zealander, Gill Dunning. Dunning was timed at 2:43.31. more than six minutes better than her

previous best time. Drake, from Wellington, was the 100th competitor home out of 3700 starters. Her time was less than two minutes outside her personal best of 2:39.56. which she set in Nagoya. Japan earlier this year. “After three marathons I’ll have a bit of break now,” she said. The first New Zealand male runner was Graham Macky, who finished seventh in 2:19.18. Another New Zealander, Barry Thompson, was tenth in 2:21.40.
