Further success likely for Collett’s mounts today
From
J. J. BOYLE
Dunedin The Wingatui jockey, Jim Collett, improved an impressive tally for the season with a hat-trick at Wingatui on Saturday, and more opportunities beckon for him on the second day of the Otago Racing Club’s winter meeting today. Collett will ride Myra May in the Birthday Handicap, first leg of the T.A.B. double. His hopeful for the Moyles Supermarket Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double, is Cee Low which, like Myra May, will be running for the Gore stable of Jim Collett’s father, Don. Cee Low joined the Collett stable -soon after two placed runs from the Bill Hillis stable at Riverton at Easter, and, as a newcomer at the Otago meeting, extends the list of form tangles that will make for lively betting on today’s 1400 m sprint, which is also the T.A.B. trifecta event. Proud Leigh, a member of Pat Corboy’s Washdyke team, gave Canterbury stables their only win on Saturday, but the “score" might be more even on today’s 10-race programme. Queen’s Pal is fancied to win the historic Birthday Handicap, a race also won by her dam, Lomond Queen, and southern hurdlers should be thoroughly tested in the Otago Brush Hurdles by the Corboy-trained Final Surge, last year’s winner. Final Surge made one of his rare mistakes at Riccarton last time out but seconds at his two previous starts were more in character. Soaring High’s third be-
hind Super Dude and Queen’s Pal in the Wrightson Handicap on Saturday held evidence of a return to top form by the Corboy stable’s best flat performer. By the time Soaring High tries for a top weight's victory today it should be known how the stable hope. Sweeney Todd, has fared in the $75,000 Great Northern Steeplechase at Ellerslie. Hardest for Soaring High to beat today will probably be Hills Peak, which trotted up over 1400 m at Invercargill, on May 14. on the same afternoon that Sweeney Todd eclipsed his steeplechase rivals. The Otago Steeplechase, won by Sweeney Todd last year, gives Bymai a chance today to improve on minor placings in his two most recent races. Last time out he was third behind Te Haroto at Riccarton — for much of the way he pulled hard and that left him rather one paced for the final pinch. Rock Crystal won the Riverton Great Western at Easter and one of his only two starts since was on the flat at Oamaru. SELECTIONS 11.05: Regalo, Final Surge. 11.40: Sangrilton, Double Shi-
