Somerfield bus service

Sir,—ls the Transport Board going to abolish the Somerfield bus service? Information suggests this is so, and that it is because of the number of corners between Howard Street and Church Square. If this is so, why does the board not change the route so that buses travel down Barrington Street, into the Brougham Street extension and into Collins, Street — the same route buses used to take. If the service is being taken off because of poor patronage, the board should know that it cannot expect good patronage all the time, especially when the buses pass through a suburb on the same route as another service. — Yours, etc., D. MINCHINGTON. Rangiora, May 21, 1984.

[The General Manager of the Christchurch Transport Board, Mr M. G. Taylor, replies: “The board has no intention of abolishing the Somerfield bus service. Proposals for substantial changes to its route—and the routes of other bus services in the sector of the town between Colombo Street and Lincoln Road—were dropped earlier this year after a substantial number of adverse comments were received from the public. The only change now proposed for the Somerfield route is an extension from its present terminus along Cashmere Road to Princess Margaret Hospital. This change is scheduled for introduction on December 17.”]
