Price thaw seen
PA Auckland The equilibrium that prevailed during the wageprice freeze has disappeared, according to a joint managing director of the Foodtown supermarket chain, Mr Graeme Kelly. He said yesterday that on Friday he had heard that prices of up to 1600 products were expected to rise
in the next few weeks, and since then his company had had notice of 300 more increases. “Back in February I had no idea prices would rise at the magnitude and rate which has occurred.” The lack of balance between incomes and prices was of considerable concern to his staff, he said. “Our people in the food industry are acutely aware
of price increases." said Mr Kelly. Foodtown management has agreed to meet staff at the company’s Mangere warehouse tomorrow for talks on wages and conditions. Foodtown employees have been trying to persuade the company to make a joint application to the Government for an exemption from the wage freeze.
