No snooker luck for Lew Adams

Lew Adams had good cause to question his luck after he failed to qualify in the South Island snooker championship yesterday. Adams, a previous winner of the event, won three of his four section games, but on a countback he was pipped as the second qualifier by Doug Hallum, also a previous champion. Adams also had the highest break of section play, a 76. However, his bad luck did not end there. Hallum withdrew because he was unwell and the rules made no allowances for a player who has qualified to be replaced. Hallum was to have

played Peter de Groot in the first post-section round and de Groot now goes straight into the quarterfinals. The other 14 to come through were S. Maffey, G. Costello, P. Keremete, G. Kennedy, R. Kariatiana, M. Peisker, B. Dunn, P. Church, R. Young, B. Jones, M. Kerrell, S. Proctor, B. Kirkness, and G. Munnerley. Costello, Kennedy, Peisker, Church, Young, Kerrell and Proctor are all from Otago and the others from Canterbury. The tournament is being played at the C.B.S.A. room at Cuthberts Green and the final will begin at 4 p.m. today.
