Russia scores 2-0 win over England
NZPA-AAP London England’s soccer team heard the now familiar catcalls at a half-empty Wembley Stadium yesterday when it was defeated 2-0 by the Soviet Union. An easy victory for the Soviet Union was not much of an encouragement for the England squad which leaves for South America this week. The manager, Bobby Robson, had an adventurous approach but this backfired when the Russians exploited midfield weaknesses. England seemed to re-
quire a rest rather than three tough internationals, and the game against Brazil next Sunday could be a humiliation. A Russian substitute, Segei Gotsanov, gained from a mistake from Mike Duxbury, and the first goal was scored in the fifty-third minute. Russia clinched victory from a well-earned goal in the last minute when the goalkeeper, Peter Shilton, was unable to hold a shot from Oleg Blokhin, and another substitute, Oleg Protasov, came in to score.
