Boot demand made
PA New Plymouth New Zealand Rugby Union councillors reiterated yesterday their demand that All Blacks wear recommended equipment in matches against France and in Australia. All Blacks are obliged, because of a $150,000 sponsorship deal with the sports goods manufacturer, Adidas, to wear Adidas equipment. Some players admitted a reluctance to comply with the demand because of their preference for equipment made by other manufacturers. The union demanded that any player who could not comply with the equipment requirement should write stating his unavailability for the tests against France. The rugby union chair-
man, Ces Blazey, said after the council meeting that the union had not received notice from any player. “The council felt that it . was desirable and right that players comply with that requirement,” Mr Blazey said. Terms of the sponsorship deal, which applies to national teams from under--17 up, will result in a minor change to the All Black stripe for the series against France. Socks the players wear will contain three white stripes — the Adidas trademark — instead of the traditional two. Mr Blazey said there would be no change to the jersey and the Adidas logo would not appear on trousers.
