In the Glen sharp in final trial
By
J. J. BOYLE
In the Glen showed sprinting prowess at Riccarton yesterday in her winding-up gallop for the Otago Racing Club’s Wrightson Handicap tomorrow. She made leisurely progress from the 1400 m to the 800 m on the No. 1 grass, but really got down to business from that point. The opening 800 m had idled by in 57.45, but on a track that gave excellent footing she hurried over the final 800 m in 48.45, and the last 600 m in an impressive 35.65. Her time for the 1400 m was
Imin 335. Queen’s Pal, the likely favourite for the Wrightson Handicap, ran her 800 m in 49.45, the last 600 m in 36.85. Earlier her stablemate Syrie Boye finished his task with 800 m in 50.65. He has not raced since last spring, but has had a good build-up for a fresh campaign, and could be hard to beat in the hurdles at Wingatui tomorrow. Double Ambition, another runner for the Prendergast stable at Wingatui, sprinted from the 800 m in 48.65. He weakened in a 1400 m at Riccarton on May 19, but
might have to be reckoned with over 1200 m at Wingatui. Charles Beaufort showed he has freshened well since he last raced when he ran 800 m keenly in 48.25. He will not race again in New Zealand, but if he travels well he could make an early breakthrough after he joins Brian Ralph’s Caulfield stable later this month. Donizetti, a last-start winner at Riccarton, followed over 800 m in 48s, and Marche Noir and Robert Mac followed in 47.55, staying on S terms throughout a good gallop.
