Lincoln conference to Southland
Organisers of the Lincoln College Farmers’ Conference have broken with tradition by moving this year’s event away from the college campus to Gore in Southland. It will be the first time in 34 years that the event has not been held at Lincoln. The conference chairman, Mr Bruce Russell, said the move was in recognition of the regional nature of farmers’ problems. He said the notion of holding a single conference to cover the whole of the South Island was outmoded, as the troubles and concerns of farmers were now more regional in nature than ever before. The conference will be held next Wednesday and Thursday and the theme is “opportunities for the future.” The opening address will be given by Dr Jock Allison, director of M.A.F.’s Invermay Agricultural Research
Centre. Following Dr Allison’s address, discussion will centre on management of the high fertility sheep flock and high fertility by injection. The topic for the afternoon session of the first day is “entry into farming.” This will include 20-minute addresses by finalists in the Lincoln College Foundation Farmer of the Year Award. The winner of the award will be announced at a conference dinner to be held in the evening. A former Professor of Soil Science at Lincoln College, Professor T. W. Walker, will be guest speaker. In the morning of the second day, the conference will consider lean lambs, new grading and the farmer’s pocket, and management of high-producing grass pastures. Cereal production opportunities for the south and deer farming will be dealt with in the final session.
