Beer price rise imminent

PA Wellington Jugs of beer are expected to rise 7c to 8c as a result of an increase in prices by the breweries. Dominion Breweries put its prices up an average of 3.8 per cent on Monday, said DB’s general manager (marketing), Mr Michael Cahill, yesterday. Lion Breweries has a price rise application being considered by the Trade and Industry Department. A Lion spokesman, Mr Des Fitzgerald, would not say what it was, but indicated that it would be similar to DB’s. It is the breweries’ first increase since the price freeze began two years ago. The executive director of

the Hotel Association, Mr Tom Sheehy, said he expected jugs to go up 7c to Bc, to 51.88 or $1.90. Expected glass prices would be: 500 ml, 97c to $l, up about 4c; 285m1, 58c to 60c, up 2c; 140 ml, 37c to 38c, up Ic. For packaged beer, quarts are expected to rise 7c to 8c; ordinary strength pints 9c to 10c, and extra strength 13c to 14c. For cans: 460 ml up 12c to 13c; 340m1, up 5c to 6c. “On the information I have, I would expect some of the Steinlager and DB Premium to be a little higher,” said Mr Sheehy. Bar prices last went up in April, but the industry was in no shape to absorb costs, he said.
