Fast league promotion

Promotion has come quickly for three young rugby league players, Phil Bancroft (Halswell), Mike Kerrigan (Papanui) and Adrian Shelford (Hornby). Last week-end they were members of the Canterbury B side which convincingly beat Otago-Southland in Dunedin. Now they, and their experienced teammate, Mike Smith (Sydenham), have been included in the Canterbury A squad for the match against West Coast at Greymouth on June 10. Bancroft, aged 19, displayed promise with Addington last season, and has made further rapid development since transferring to Halswell. His spontaneous attacking play at stand-off half and accurate goalkicking have been prime

factors in his adopted club’s rise to second position on the premiership table. Whether Kerrigan, aged 20, plays at Greymouth will depend on the positioning of Marty Crequer (Hornby). Kerrigan and Pomare Connell (Addington) are the only club wings in the 17-man squad, but Crequer has frequently appeared on the flank of the back-line at representative level. Shelford, aged 20 and a former junior international, has tough competition in his quest for a place in the pack. The other seven forwards named have all played for South Island, and Shelford’s best chance is as a challenger for a front-row position alongside his clubmates, Wayne Wallace and Ross Taylor.

With 17 players in the squad, the selectors (Jim Anderson, Ray Haffenden and Gary Clarke) have varied options in case of injuries. Richard Hampton (Kaiapoi) and Scott Barrow (Linwood) are two whose fitness will be monitored. The squad is.— R. L. Alfeld (Hornby), P. A. Connell (Addington), M. S. Kerrigan (Papanui), M. P. Crequer (Hornby), R. Hampton (Kaiapoi), A. Wildermoth (MaristWestem), P. Bancroft (Halswell), D. C. Field (Sydenham), M. Forsey (Sydenham), W. J. Wallace (Hornby), L. M. Hale (Sydenham), R. H. Taylor (Hornby), A. T. Shelford (Hornby), R. N. Tuuta (Kaiapoi), S. I. Barrow (Linwood), M. J. Smith (Sydenham), B. R. Edkins (Hornby). Training Monday, Leslie Park, 2 p.m.—Advt.
