McEnroe in, Lewis out

NZPA-Reuter Paris The world number one, John McEnroe, made short work of the Argentinian qualifier, Horacio de la Pena, but the defending champion, Yannick Noah, was made to struggle for his win in the first round of the French Opep tennis championships yesterday.

New Zealand’s Chris Lewis, the runner-up to McEnroe at Wimbledon and seeded sixteenth for the open, succumbed 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 to the Hungarian, Balazs Taroczy, though his defeat was not a major upset because clay is not his best surface.
