N.Z. Cup start for Tuapeka Star

Special corresondent Dunedin Cliff Cummings, the Lawrence breeder, plans to race the well-performed Australian racemare, Tuapeka Star, in the New Zealand Cup in November, then retire her from racing. Mr Cummings bred Tuapeka Star and he has her on lease to Laurie Green and the Avenal (Victoria) trainer, Graham Morgan, for whom she has won 23 races and sAustl29,ooo in stakes. Mr Cummings will fly to Melbourne at the end of July to arrange a new lease. The lease will include Mr Cummings and his daughter, Kay Shaw, of Dunedin, in the ownership. This will enable Tuapeka Star to continue racing through to November. Tuapeka Star will be served by Smooth Fella

when she returns to New Zealand. A rising eight-year-old mare by Knowing Bret from Sakantula, Tuapeka Star won a $6OOO race for mares and fillies at Moonee Valley a fortnight ago. She won the 1980 Princess Stakes at Harold Park in Sydney in lmin 595, an Australian and New Zealand record for a three-year-old filly. She also has won a heat and final of the Edgar Tatlow Stakes in Victoria, the 1982 Kaiser Stuhl Cup, the 1983 Shepparton Cup and New South Wales Breeders’ Championship. her half-brother, Brad Adios, also bred by Mr Cummings at his Tuapeka stud, won 29 races, including the 1978 Victoria and Queensland Derbys, the 1980 Australia Championship and the 1977 Sires’ Produce Stakes and $179,804. Brad Adios, sold for $l6OO

at the New Zealand National Yearling Sale, was trained by Morgan’s wife, Sue. By Brad Hanover, Brad Adios is now at stud.

Tuapeka Wreka, a two-year-old half-broken by Noddlum and Tuapeka Star and Brad Adios, qualified impressively at Addington last week. He won a trial by seven lengths and recorded 3min 14.7 s for 2400 m.

Tuapeka Wreka is trained by Ross Payne at Ladbrooks for Alastair Halligan, of Dunedin. Mr Halligan bought Tuapeka Wreka from Mr Cummings when the colt was seven days old. Mr Halligan earlier bought another of Sakantula’s progeny, Malakula (by Out to Win). Malakula, now a four-year-old, won a Cl race at Hutt Park in September from Payne’s stable, Sakantula has a weanling Smooth Fella colt and she is in foal to El Patron.
