Olympic invitations?
NZPA-Reuter Los Angeles The Los Angeles Olympics chief, Peter Ueberroth, is exploring the possibility of allowing athletes from countries not coming to the summer Games to compete individually under the Olympic flag, Los Angeles Olympic officials said yesterday. The Los Angeles Olympic Organising Committee has received about a dozen messages from athletes in Eastern Europe whose countries will not take part asking if they could still compete, the officials said. Mr Ueberroth, the committee president, was expected to raise the matter at a meeting of the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne, Switzerland, today. Mr Ueberroth, who will head a big Los Angeles delegation to the meeting, is also expected to raise the question of whether Soviet judges and other officials should be allowed to take part in the Games even though the Soviet Union will not send athletes, the officials said. However, the Los Angeles committee does not have the power to exclude Soviet judges, the officials said.
