Bicycle care
Bicycles will last a long time if they are properly looked after. Dust, mud and grease should be wiped off all framework once or twice a month, and moving parts should receive a light oil every few weeks. Tyres need to be kept pumped up if they are to last a reasonable time. If a bicycle is not going to be used for a lengthy period, it should be hung up because the weight of the bicycle standing on flat tyres can cause rubber tyres to rot quickly. Before going for a ride it pays to check that the bicycle is safe. Spin the tyres to look for
nails or glass which could canse a puncture. Check that the. brakes work; twist the handlebars to make sure they are not loose; wiggle the saddle to ensure that it is tight and does not twist sideways. Wiggle the spokes two at a time to see if any are broken; and make sure nothing is hanging loose which could get caught in the wheels. Most importantly at this time of year when darkness falls early, ensure that the front and rear lights are working. Even during daylight hours, smoggy, dull days reduce visibility for other road users — make it easier for them to see you by using a light.
