Vandals fired at church windows
The Methodist and Presbyterian Union Parish of Lyttelton faces a $4OO repair bill after air rifle shots were fired through windows of the St John Presbyterian Church on Thursday evening. Vandals fired 10 slugs through two of the church’s front leadlight windows, scattering glass about 12 metres to the altar. The parish minister, the Rev. Clive Smith, said it was the first case of vandalism the church had encountered. “With any public building you have to expect a certain amounV of damage some
time or another, but you like to think it will never happen,” he said. Mr Smith said he considered it fortunate that a large stainned-glass window fronting the Methodist chapel several metres away was not damaged in the attack. He said there was no precaution from vandalism, and hoped the incident was a "one-off.” The windows would be repaired this week. The Lyttelton police are investigating the incident and want to hear from anyone who may have seen people outside the church on Thursday evening.
