Upset in Irish classic
NZPA-Reuter Dublin The English jockey, Philip Robinson, completed a classic double at the Curragh on Saturday when he won the Irish 1000 Guineas on the 20-to-1 chance, Katies. The unfancied filly took up the running 300 m from home and just held on by a neck from another outsider, Alianna, ridden by Declan Gillespie, with Christy Roche on So Fine a short head away in third place. Masarika, the French 1000 Guineas winner, started 2-1 favourite but could only finish fifth of 23 after being prominently placed for much of the way. Robinson won the English 1000 Guineas earlier this month on Pebbles for Clive Brittain. He was riding on Saturday for another Newmarket trainer, Mick Ryan, who has won several top Dutch races but who was registering his first major classic victory. Katies’s only two previous victories in six outings had been at provincial tracks and the filly had not been expected to provide the major English challenge.
