Born bowlers

Sir, — Your edition of Wednesday May 23, carried an article under the by-line of a scion of a family renowned for its accuracy. In it, John Howell (the recentlyappointed national cricket coach) says that fast bowlers are born, not made. A quick perusal of the birth columns reveals only the arrival of sons, and daughters; not fastbowlers. If fast bowlers were born, China would have about 500,000 of them. It in fact, has none. Are there some born surgeons, then? Give me a trained one from a quality medical fraternity, any day. New Zealand needs to set up the right fathers, coaches, pitcher and psychology to obtain quality fast bowlers. I am sure all cricketers and cricket-lovers will join me in wishing John Howell well. — Yours, etc.,

ALAN R. ALTY. May 24, 1984.
