Wage increase

Sir,—D. J. O’Rourke is trying to excuse himself for having supported an employer who broke the wage freeze by making exaggerated statements. Prices cannot be increased freely and the Employers’ Federation, at the time of the wage increase, said it was all that they could pay. D. J. O’Rourke apparently supports the inconvenience faced by passengers on the Cook Strait ferry and the action which now compels the railways to call in their opposition — road transport — to help clear freight congestion. He also must support freezing-workers in leaving animals hungry in holding yards, and at the same time threatening their own future employment. The wage freeze should not be broken either for greediness or increased levies for Labour’s election funds.—Yours, etc., J. F. GARVEY. May 22, 1984.
