General forecast: Rain easing in the north of the South Island to scattered showers, with northwesterlies developing. Periods of rain easing from the north in Canterbury and the West Coast. North-east-erlies, moderate on the West Coast but strong at times east of the Alps. District forecasts: Canterbury: North-easter-lies; fresh at times about the coast; rain easing. Marlborough, Nelson: Moderate north-westerlies; cloudy at times with scattered showers.

Buller: Moderate northerlies; cool with occasional showers. Westland: North-easterlies, fresh at times; rain easing to showers during the day. Tomorrow: Further rain. Extended range forecast until Monday: A complex trough of low pressure with several low centres in it lies from Northland to the central Tasman Sea, and is drifting slowly south-east. By Sunday it should be east of New Zealand with a cold southerly outbreak affecting most of the country.
