Supervision of children

Sir,—The points made by H. Harding on parental supervision (May 19) are sound in themselves, but rather insensitive when related to the death of a specific child. My sympathy for the parents involved is such that I can recognise how easily an eager toddler can outwit safety measures or take advantage of a momentary human lapse of

attention. For most parents such an incident has led only to minor upsets and my heart goes out to those who have paid more dearly. Useful as it may be to draw attention to parental responsibilities, I feel these can stand on their own merits and hardly need to be expounded at the expense of the feelings of the parents involved in this tragedy.—Yours, etc., B. MATTHEWS. May 20, 1984.
