Forest clearance

Sir,—As one of the West Coast organisers of the Maruia Declaration, I refute Mr Ferguson’s allegations (May 12) on the validity of the local signatures. These allegations of bogus names and other inconsisteg\ises have become a hoary chest-

nut subject to increasing exaggeration over the years. Before Mr Ferguson writes any more letters on this topic, I believe it is only fair and proper that he thoroughly documents his allegations and submits them to the petition’s organisers, something he has never done. Unpalatable as it may be to Mr Ferguson, there has always been a sizeable number of West Coasters who have supported native forest conservation based on their direct experience of the wastefulness and destructiveness of many forestry activities. As the burn-offs continue and as the benefits of tourism and small-scale sustained yield milling are increasingly recognised, West Coast support for conservation will continue to grow. — Yours, etc., K. D. SMITH, Harihari. May 20, 1984.
