Four nominations for Labour presidency

Four nominations have been received, including two from Christchurch, for the post of president of the Labour Party when Mr J. P. Anderton steps down in September.
Mr W. R. Cameron, a member of the national executive of the Federation of Labour, who is secretary of the Canterbury Meat Workers’ Union and a former member of the Labour Party Council is one seeking the post. As is Ms M. • Wilson who has been the Labour Party junior vice-president for the last 12 months and is generally seen as Mr Anderton’s heir apparent. She is also a number of the party’|
executive and policy committee, and is seeking no other office.
The only member of Parliament seeking the presidency is Dr Peter Tapsell (Lab., Eastern Maori), a former councillor who stood unsuccessfully against Mr Anderton last vear.
The fourth contender is Mr W. Woods, a former electorate candidate, who is also contesting the post of senior vice-president against the incumbent, Mr S. McCaffley, who has held the position since 1979.
Six candidates seek the post of junior vice-president now that Ms Wilson is a candidate for the president’s job. They are: Mr F. Anderson, a councillor since 1979; Ms L. Crawley, active in the
party in Christchurch and chairperson of the party’s Pacific Island Council; Mr D. Duggan, an executive member of the council and formerly junior vice-presi-dent from 1979-83; Mr 0. Hansen, treasurer of the Waikato electorate committee; Dr Tapsell and Mr W. Woods.
Twenty-seven nominations have been made for the five seats on the party’s executive. One sitting member, Mr A. J. Wallbank, has not sought renomination and is Labour’s candidate for the Gisborne electorate.
The other four sitting members have all sought re-election — Mr F. Anderson, Ms H. Clark, Mr D. Duggan, and Mr J. Hercus.

R. Barker, Mr W. Bennett, Mr W. R. Cameron, Ms L. Crawley, Mr A. Grooby, Mr 0. Hansen, Mr G. Highfield, Mr G. Leckey, Mr G. Lomax, Mr S. McCaffley, Ms B. Magner, Mr A. O’Neill, Mr D. Samuels, Mr I. Scott. Ms E. Stevenson, Mr J. Sutton, Dr Tapsell, Ms E. Tennet, Mr A. Timms, Mr W. Woods, and Mr G. Woodford. Twelve nominations have been received for the two women’s positions on the council. These include the two sitting members — Ms E. Tennet and Ms L. Welch. The others are: Ms M. Clark, Ms L. Crawley, Ms S. Duffy, Ms R. Dyson, Ms B. Magner, Ms S. Shore, Ms E. Stevenson, Ms B. Thomson, Ms P. Webster, and Ms 0. Winterburn.
