Sect head charged
A Paris magistrate has charged the head of the French branch of the World Unification Church, known popularly as the “Moon sect,” with tax evasion of up to 6.5 million francs ($1,405,000). Henri Blanchard, aged 41, was charged after the French Internal Revenue Service accused his sect, based in the United States, of failing to declare its earnings in France. Fiscal authorities estimated that the sect had made profits of more than 13 million francs ($2.8 million) on sales of the sect’s journal, “New Hope," between 1979 and 1981. — Paris.
