Crewmen charged with stowaway deaths

NZPA-Reuter Piraeus, Greece A Greek ship’s master and 11 of his crew who threw, stowaways overboard into the Indian Ocean were charged yesterday with causing death. None of the 11 young Kenyan stowaways is believed to have survived their ordeal in the sharkinfested waters off Mombasa. Nine Greeks and three Pakistanis from the 9778-ton Garifalia C, who have admitted throwing the stowaways into the ocean, face jail terms from 10 years to life. A public prosecutor had earlier announced lesser charges against 11 seamen of exposing people to danger. In announcing the more severe charges yesterday he said that a twelfth man had admitted that he also had taken part. The incident took place on March 17 off the East African coast as the freighter was bound for Karachi. Officials in Mombasa said yesterday that they feared all 11 had drowned.
